Clifftop luxury on North Devon Coast
— 25 Nov 2024
The upgrading and extension works to this stunning property, perched on a clifftop in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a Marine Conservation area and a Site of Special Scientific Interest on the North Devon Heritage Coast have recently been completed.
Jonathan Rhind Architects developed concept designs, gained planning permission, drew up a technical package, and undertook contract administration on site for the challenging project.
The original house dates from the mid-19th century, with 20th century additions, and was tired, outdated, and required improvements to the layout and services. The upgrades, to create a luxurious family home were carefully designed to ensure minimal impact on the important surrounding landscape.
Main contractor, Heddon Mill, skilfully negotiated the challenging site, with the North Atlantic merely metres away; dealing with salt-laden winds, coastal storms and a constrained hillside location. The finished house is completed to a very high standard, with exceptional levels of insulation, sustainable energy sources – see our previous blog on the properties’ sustainability measures – and beautifully detailed finishes. The stunning heritage-style aluminium windows and doors by Alumitech complement the slate hung and lime rendered walls of the main house, and rubblestone vertical clad pool house. The robust finishes are carefully designed to withstand the hostile coastal location. Hard landscaping, planting schemes and external lighting designed by Landscaping specialists Sienna Earth are carefully designed to root the house in the dramatic landscape.
The once tired cottage is now an elegant, efficient and comfortable home, beautifully renovated to a high standard while respecting the history of the property and its place in the local vernacular.
