Iconic Arts & Crafts Devon Architecture
— 18 Aug 2022
A group from Jonathan Rhind Architect’s Taunton office were lucky enough to visit the newly restored Winsford Cottage Hospital in Halwill Junction, Devon for a tour with project architect John Beauchamp as part of their CPD training.
Winsford Cottage Hospital is the only hospital designed by influential Arts & Crafts architect Charles Voysey, who is known for his private houses, a style reflected in the building’s design. The hospital was commissioned by philanthropist Maria Medley who was concerned at the lack of medical facilities for the local rural communities. Opened in 1900 and in use for nearly a century until closing to patients in 1998, the Grade II* listed building had fallen into disrepair before the Landmark Trust, with the support of the local community took on its restoration in 2018.
Voysey's designs were meticulously detailed and the restoration was carefully planned to ensure his design was maintained. The Delabole slate roof was reslated in salvaged slates in the original diminishing courses, the interior was replastered in lime and a group of dedicated local volunteers painstakingly chipped the modern vinyl covering off the original mosaic floor to return it to its former glory.
Following the restoration, The Landmark Trust have opened the property to community use and as a holiday let which contributes to the repair costs and continued maintenance.
With thanks to John Beauchamp of Benjamin and Beauchamp Architects who undertook the restoration and lead the tour.
