Dartmoor house extension to create elegant family home
— 30 Oct 2019
Dartmoor National Park with its rugged moorlands and rolling pasture is considered by many to provide the perfect pastoral idyll to raise a family. And so it is not surprising that for many people finding the perfect location is the first step to creating that ideal home.
This is the case for recent clients of Jonathan Rhind Architects who purchased a property which hadn’t come on the market for over 30 years, and provides the sweeping rural views, private location, land and landscaped gardens which meets their requirements.
The house itself has a good sized ground floor, however, it is bottom heavy and the clients would like to rebuild the existing haphazard rambling rear one storey element of the house with a new two storey extension. This would create a new better ordered ground floor living space to improve flow and enhance connections with the surrounding countryside, as well as adding further bedrooms and master bedroom ensuite to create a well proportioned family home.
Jonathan Rhind Architects were recommended to the client because of our experience in gaining planning for projects in National Parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and for difficult sites and listed property. The planning application for the extension to this house meets the criteria for residential property extensions set out in the Dartmoor National Park Management and Delivery Plan, and Jonathan Rhind Architects are in close consultation with the Dartmoor National Park Planning department to ensure a positive outcome.
The proposed works will improve this tired house, creating more generous internal spaces that are in proportion to the property and its grounds, and the extension will better the relationship between the house and its surrounding garden and site.
