Wulfheard Manor, Woolsery

4 1216 Woolsery Grade II listed Manor render front

Grade II listed Wulfheard Manor is one of the projects at the heart of the regeneration of Woolsery village undertaken by entrepreneurs Michael and Xochi Birch. Jonathan Rhind Architects have successfully achieved planning permission, put the project out to tender and undertaken contract administration, as well as providing technical drawings for the complex project.

The Grade II listed Manor occupies a prominent position at the centre of the village, and dates from c.1500 with additions in the 17th, 18th and 20th Centuries. The Manor and associated building were in very poor condition and the historic fabric had decayed significantly.

It is to re-open as a hotel, and the philosophy behind the work is to repair, conserve and renovate the existing building whilst adding dynamic new additions as a sustainable framework for use as a hotel. The emphasis is on quality and exceptional craftmanship, combined with contemporary new design to create style and luxury within the framework of a beautifully conserved historic building.

Ground source heat pumps will provide sustainable energy, while green roofs have been incorporated over the extensive basement service rooms improving the sustainability of the project which was an important driver.

The works have ensured a sustainable use for the building, in turn securing its long term future.
