A cluster of small farm buildings with incoherent and ad hoc extensions were rationalised and upgraded to create two complementary properties with new elements, appropriate in scale and subservient to the original farmhouse. Traditional materials and finishes were used to upgrade the main house such as new painted timber casement windows to replace uPVC; and contemporary detailing for the new structures.
Inside the stair was a fully bespoke design by Jonathan Rhind Architects. It is a key feature of the large extension blending traditional materiality with contemporary uncluttered forms. The concept was to feature floating treads on a steel frame with a glass balustrade and oak handrail without any traditional newel posts. The glass balustrade would have entirely concealed fixings with treads detailed to provide chunky monolithic steps so as to give the illusion of there being no balustrade at all. We worked alongside Anthony Branfield Construction, Western Fabrications and Menzfeld Bespoke Joinery to develop the design.
The feature fireplace complements the adjacent stair with a bespoke steel hood over the proprietary living flame gas glass fire box over a rubble stone plinth and slate capping. As the property would be used as an exclusive holiday let, the provision of this LPG enclosed fire meant guests could simply press a button to operate the fireplace, requiring no frequent maintenance or cleaning and makes it safer for mixed groups and families. It offers a dramatic focal point within the surrounding open plan kitchen / dining / sitting room at the heart of this luxury home.
Formal landscaping of the grounds surrounding the properties and the new pool house have enhanced the setting, with a sweeping terrace, ha-ha, terraced lawns and informal pathways, creating a relaxing space from which to enjoy the incredible views. Specimen trees, understorey shrubs and other plantings soften the hard landscaping and screen modern agricultural buildings.
The geometric pool house is buried in the hillside, with only glazing, rubble stone masonry and the feature living Brise Soleil visible. It is absorbed by the landscape, and from the pool there are panoramic views south over the valley.
