Restormel Castle, Lostwithiel
Restormel Castle is one of the oldest and best preserved motte-and-bailey castles in Cornwall. This Grade I listed Schedule Monument belongs to the Duchy of Cornwall and is cared for by English Heritage.
English Heritage commissioned the practice to carry our an extensive condition survey of the structures and site in 2003. The practice inspected the masonry using ropes and abseiling techniques to ensure we obtained a comprehensive understanding of the remaining structures. Our condition report and recommendations formed the basis of a Conservation Management Plan for the site to enable English Heritage to plan for future maintenance. In 2005 the practice was asked to design and oversee the installation of safety hand rails to the more precipitous parts of the building in addition to improving access in general. These new additions to the scheduled monument needed to be highly sensitive to the historic context and architectural qualities of the site.
