Responsible Construction

Over the last 10 years the practice has developed its in-house training to keep up with the fast-developing issues addressing the impact both the building and occupation of a building has and will have on the wider environment.

We maintain close contact with the local suppliers of both green materials and technologies and regularly review central and local government policy issues in order to advise our clients appropriately, as much of the advice currently available can be conflicting.

In our practice, conservation work applies both to the reuse of an important and often historic building material resource as well as designing to minimise the impact of the building on the local and world environment.

Featured Project nr Chittelhamholt, Umberleigh.
A privately owned dwelling undergoing extensive internal and external repairs and upgrade along with a new extension including a large timber decked balcony. The project has incorporated many traditional building methods including replacement of modern materials with traditional lime renders, modern paints with breathable lime based paints, UPVC rainwater goods with cast iron rainwater goods, new Welsh slate roof, repair of deteriorated joinery using traditional joinery repairs. This project has also combined many modern sustainable technologies such as rainwater harvesting and recycling, reed bed drainage system for cleaning and filtering the foul drainage, top quality insulation throughout to reduce heat losses, energy efficient biomass (woodchip) boiler underfloor heating and hot water system. The house now has a full house under floor heating system throughout the ground and first floor rooms. The purpose built boiler house and woodchip store contains a 2000L hotwater buffer tank, 100kW Biomass boiler fed with woodchips automatically from the chipstore by the use of an agitator and Auger unit. The first tonne delivery of woodchip was delivered in mid December to allow for a specially designed chipstore hatch to be one person operated.
