Brick

The widespread use of brick construction throughout the world over a very long period of time is well recorded.

Despite this there has historically been a paucity of research on the deterioration mechanisms (bio deterioration, salt damage and the effects of air pollutants and moisture) on this material. As a result often conservation repair work to brick is poorly informed and executed or the materials tend to get replaced with a close approximation of the original brick. This has started to change and although most of the historic building stock in the South West is not constructed in brick the practice is committed to benefiting from recent research work and case studies to better inform our own work when conserving and maintaining brick build structures and decoration. Critical to maintaining the longest life for remaining historic brick is understanding the nature and application of suitable mortars for repointing.
